We need to go global with action, drama and adventure, feels Ashutosh Gowariker
Filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker, who received acclaim for his directorial Lagaan,Swadesh and Jodha Akbar, says that if Indian filmmakers want to take that big leap in the international market, they should experiment with popular global genres like action, drama and adventure.
“Our genre is song and dance, it is music, it is love stories and that are actually, if you look at the rules, just five percent (of the total). What rules is action, drama, and adventure – they are the most popular global genre,” said the 48-year-old said on Wednesday at the14th Mumbai Film Festival’s Open Forum.
Gowariker believes the language of a film also makes a difference. “If we can have these genres in the English language, which has a global reach, then we will be able to take those strides. But if we focus only on personal films, musicals, then it’s going to be difficult. It will be taken as novelty, but we will not be able to make that leap,” he said.
He states that there are filmmakers in the country who want to make films without songs and dance and they should be given a chance to do it. “There are two kinds of filmmakers right now in the country. One is the filmmaker who has stories for the Indian audience. .
In 2010, Gowariker’s last directorial Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey came and currently he is working on a script.
